Job Description
Summary
The IT Engineer provides scientific computing and IT systems support for laboratory and research environments. This role focuses on workstation administration, hardware and software support, infrastructure maintenance, and user support while ensuring compliance with strict security and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform software application maintenance on scientific workstations across Windows, macOS, and Linux environments
- Execute routine and preventative maintenance including installations, disk optimization, and system monitoring
- Maintain and troubleshoot end-user computing hardware including workstations, network switches, and routers
- Detect, isolate, document, and resolve system outages and technical issues in laboratory environments
- Respond to user support requests for hardware and software issues and escalate as appropriate
- Communicate system status updates and resolution progress to users
- Configure and manage Windows and macOS workstations with Active Directory integration
- Ensure compliance with security standards, policies, and operational procedures
- Provide direct customer support for day-to-day technical operations
- Document incidents, resolutions, and activities in logging and reporting tools
- Support end-user documentation, training, system deployments, and computer moves
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a scientific or technical discipline including engineering, computer science, information systems, or related field
- 10+ years of experience supporting scientific or technical computing environments
- Strong experience administering Windows and macOS systems
- Experience with Active Directory and Windows Server Update Services
- Proven troubleshooting skills for laboratory instrumentation systems and associated software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation and reporting
- Experience supporting highly technical users including scientists and researchers
- U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with Linux operating systems such as Ubuntu or Oracle Enterprise Linux
- Familiarity with scripting languages and automation tools
