Job Description
Summary
The Battery Systems Research and Development Engineer designs, develops, and tests advanced battery systems for high-power and high-energy electric propulsion applications. This role focuses on innovation, modeling, experimentation, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver safe, high-performance battery solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and prototype battery modules and packs to improve performance, safety, and reliability
- Investigate and evaluate new battery chemistries through research, partnerships, and competitive benchmarking
- Model and simulate battery systems using computational tools to predict performance, thermal behavior, and safety
- Design and execute comprehensive laboratory testing protocols including performance, lifecycle, thermal, and vibration testing
- Collect, analyze, and interpret large data sets to identify performance trends and root causes of failures
- Conduct safety assessments including DFMEA and ensure compliance with lithium battery safety standards
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and fabrication teams to integrate battery systems into complex platforms
- Prepare technical reports, schematics, design documentation, SOPs, and validation plans
- Support research initiatives aligned with defense, energy, and emerging technology programs
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science
- Extensive experience in battery systems research and development
- Strong understanding of high-voltage battery system design concepts
- Experience troubleshooting and integrating hardware into complex systems
- Ability to work within or lead multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Knowledge of battery state estimation and control algorithms
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced experience with prototype development and experimental validation
- Published technical work in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings
- Eligibility or ability to obtain government security clearance
- Experience supporting defense, energy, or military research programs
